ARTIST'S STATEMENTS by Thomas Trivitt

The only artist better than me today is me tomorrow.

I never doubted that I had the talent, only that I had the time.

Talent is knowing which accidents to keep and which to throw away.

Don't let your dreams get crushed by the weight of your own arrogance.

Cream always rises to the top. Sometimes it just takes longer because so much shit is in the way.

Who wants to be the next Warhol. . .the guy never had sex.

You've got to do a lot of living before your paintings have any life.

The more you have to explain your work the less anyone is likely to care.

All paintings are self portraits but only some of them look like the artist.

The job of the artist is to look at oneself, look at the world, and create what lies between.

I've finally gotten old enough to learn how to paint like a child.

I'm tired of being on the outside looking in. . . I want to be on the inside looking up.

It doesn't take brains to be an artist, but it doesn't hurt either.

I thought I made a masterpiece once but the painting was just upside down.

Looking is not the same as seeing.

Whether making art or making love, if you're doing it right you're going to get messy.

It's hard to talk to Cubists because they think there are six sides to every story.

Making art beats working for a living.

Sometimes bad art comes from good ideas.

If you take a crap on the floor of a supermarket they call the police, but if you take a crap on the floor of a gallery they call it Art.

If God could paint he wouldn't have needed nature.

Shameless self promotion is the American way.

When you have nothing left to say . . . listen.

Money can't buy happiness, but money can buy my art, and that makes me happy.

I inherited my artistic genes from my MoMA and Dada

Making stuff is better than breaking stuff.

If I was a Roman Gladiator, My name would be "Minimalist Maximus".

Not enough green makes me blue.

Buying a painting is like letting the artist live with you without worrying about the smell.

Even the greatest painting in the world won't cure cancer.

Beginning a painting is difficult.  Ending one is impossible.

It says a lot about our society that Donald Duck is more famous than Donald Judd.

If I didn't make art,  I'd make trouble.

Angst is Overrated.
